2010 ASID Award Winning DesignIn this space, our goal was to create a rustic contemporary, dog friendly home that brings the outside in through thoughtfully designed floor plans that lend themselves to entertaining. We had to ensure that the interior spaces relate to the outdoors, combine the homeowners’ two distinct design styles and create sophisticated interior spaces with durable furnishings.To do this, we incorporated a rustic design appeal with a contemporary, sleek furnishings by utilizing warm brown and taupe tones with pops of color throughout. We used wood and stone materials to lend modern spaces warmth and to relate to the outdoors.The floor plans throughout the home ensure that windows and views are focal points and that the rooms are natural conduits to the outdoors whenever doorways are available. For entertaining, we maximized seating throughout the first floor and kept walkways open for ease of flow. Finally, we selected fabrics with extended lifetimes, durability and stain resistance.Special features of the home include, the Marvin Ultimate Lift and Slide doors, which we placed along the dining, kitchen, and family room. These floor-to-ceiling windows recede into the home’s walls and include full screen protection.In addition, the custom designed stairway uses a metal framework to create a sleek, modern feel. Adding character doesn't have to break the bank. We worked with the client to create a rustic cabinet finish which is just as artsy as he is. This client has great taste and he found cool stools and commissioned a bench made by an artist to blend in with the rest of the house. The artist also installed plumbing pipe as a footrail. The eclectic nature of the furnishings really compliments the custom cabinetry.We really like the juxtaposition of industrial and rustic elements we used for this client. The modern lines of the glass and stainless hood and the white laminate cabinetry are clean and minimal while the textural island and uppers above the sink create a rustic look. The request from my client for this kitchen remodel was to imbue the room with a rustic farmhouse feeling, but without the usual tropes or kitsch. What resulted is a beautiful mix of refined and rural. To begin, we laid down a stunning silver travertine floor in a Versailles pattern and used the color palette to inform the rest of the space. The bleached silvery wood of the island and the cream cabinetry compliment the flooring. Of course the stainless steel appliances continue the palette, as do the porcelain backsplash tiles made to look like rusted or aged metal. The deep bowl farmhouse sink and faucet that looks like it is from a bygone era give the kitchen a sense of permanence and a connection to the past without veering into theme-park design.Photos by: Bernardo Grijalva

The existing kitchen was separated from the family room by a 17’ long bookcase. It was the first thing you saw upon entering and it hid much of the light and views to the backyard making the space feel claustrophobic. The laundry room was part of the kitchen space without any attempt to conceal the washer and dryer. Removing the long bookcase opened the opportunity to add counter stools in the kitchen and decided to align a target wall opposite the front door to help maintain some division within the main space while creating a space for the refrigerator. This also allowed us to create an open laundry room concept that would be hidden from view from all other areas. We kept the industrial feel of the exposed building materials, which we complimented with textured melamine slab doors for the new kitchen cabinets. We maintained the galley set up but defined the kitchen from the utility area by changing both thickness and color of the countertop materials. Because the back of the house is mainly windows, there was very little wall space for upper cabinets and everyday dish storage. We designed a custom ceiling hung shelf system that floats in front of the windows, and is mostly out of view from the sitting area. Tall cabinets are installed along the only available wall to support both kitchen and laundry room functions. We used cable lighting threaded through the beams which really punctuates the industrial aesthetic.

In this Basem*nt, we created a place to relax, entertain, and ultimately create memories in this glam, elegant, with a rustic twist vibe space. The Cambria Luxury Series countertop makes a statement and sets the tone. A white background intersected with bold, translucent black and charcoal veins with muted light gray spatter and cross veins dispersed throughout. We created three intimate areas to entertain without feeling separated as a whole.

A re-creation of a 1950’s home in SF, is now family friendly and perfect for entertaining. A closed floor plan was opened to maximize the beautiful downtown bay view. This absolutely stunning cottage kitchen will catch your eye from the moment you set foot in the front door. Situated on an island up in the Muskoka region, this cottage is bathed in natural light, cooled by soothing cross-breezes off the lake, and surrounded by greenery outside the windows covering almost every wall. The distressed and antiqued spanish cedar cabinets and island are complemented by white quartz countertops and a fridge and pantry finished with antiqued white panels. Ambient lighting, fresh flowers, and a set of classic, wooden stools add to the warmth and character of this fabulous hosting space - perfect for the beautiful family who lives there!⠀
