We believe it takes more than good recipes to make a food blog great and this list showcases some food bloggers that are clearly putting a lot of effort into creating the best food blogs they can.

Since we knew that we had a pretty savvy group of food bloggers right in our own backyard, we put out a “call for content” to our Facebook group. We rounded up their food blogs and their tips on how to publish a great food blog in 2024.

This article also shares tips and links to some terrific resources to help you create the best food blog that you can as well!

So, we asked our members to post a link to their food blog and tell us what makes it special! Boy, did we get a terrific response … and we were truly impressed with the quality of these sites.

Here is a list of our clients’ best food blogs as well as some insider tips to help new food bloggers learn what it truly takes to create a “best” food blog in 2024.

Here’s a hint: It is more than just knowing how to cook.

We noticed immediately that our food bloggers had chosen great themes, so our first blogging tip is to choose a great theme!

This scrumptious-looking Vegan Lemon Drizzle Cake should make it easy to see that your ability to photograph your food in a way that makes the viewer’s mouth water is probably even more important than how the food actually tastes. Presentation and learning the art of food photography are essential requirements for being included on any list of best food blogs.

Blogging Tip: Great Photography Is Key

Whether you are blogging about food or another subject, the quality of your photographs can make all the difference in the success of your blog. Take a photography course, hire a photographer, or choose the highest quality stock photos possible … do whatever it takes to showcase your food in creative and appetizing ways.

One of the tricks for taking great pictures of your food is to shoot them in soft, diffused natural light. You should even try photographing your food outside, but not in direct sunlight. Overcast days or shooting in front of a window are ideal. If the sun is shining brightly through the window, try a semi-transparent white curtain to diffuse the light.

We asked Rachel how she decides which social buttons to offer her visitors. She said that they only use social buttons that their readers engage with and they chose Social Warfare because it encourages their users to pin the right images from their site, especially for Whole30, which is a huge influence for their food blog.

Blogging Tip: Stay True To Your Niche

Finding a niche and staying true to it is another essential ingredient to the success of your food blog as allowing your blog to become a hodgepodge goes against building an authoritative site and would be a detriment to your SEO efforts.

Robert Nissenbaum of TSO Media advises bloggers to stick to just a few categories. “If your content falls outside of those, rather than create a new category, consider if the content even belongs on your site,” said Robert. He has similar thoughts about tags and recommends against using a tag if there is only a mention of the tag. They should be used when the concept is discussed.

With more than one-third of the world’s population using social media, and 3.5 billion searches processed every day on Google, the savviest food bloggers are the ones that realize that it takes optimizing for both social AND search to maximize the amount of traffic driven to their site.

What they may not know is that optimizing your blog posts for Pinterest is a great way to optimize for the search engines as well — kind of like killing two birds with one stone.

Blogging Tip: Disclose Your Affiliate Links And Sponsored Content

Her blog focuses on easy midweek meals that are packed with flavor, and easy entertaining recipes that look incredible but are secretly really easy. She also shares meal planning tips to help busy people eat better, waste less and save money!

We asked Eb what she thinks makes a successful food blog and she said, “Get to grips with SEO – I think it would be very hard to have a truly successful food blog without a good understanding of SEO and putting that knowledge into practice.”

Editor’s Note: Have you conducted an SEO Audit on your site lately? Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a necessary part of blogging and can make all the difference when it comes to whether or not your blog will be found via Search. Use our beginner’s guide to SEO to audit your site.

Eb also recommended that you have a clear call to action. Ask yourself what you want your reader to do after they have read your post and make it very clear, don’t just rely on them to know. For example, do you want them to share your post? Suggest that they ‘pin it for later’ or share to Yummly, a popular food-inspired search engine (think Pinterest but with a lot more food p*rn).

If you are a new food blogger, be sure to choose the Yummly button, available with Social Warfare – Pro, so that your readers can easily save your recipe to their recipe box.
