Why you’ll love this cottage cheese mousse

Cottage cheese can satisfy your chocolate cravings- you heard me. At this point you have to ask: is there anything cottage cheese can’t do!?

This cottage cheese chocolate mousse is smooth, sweet and creamy and far from the regular texture and flavor of cottage cheese. If you’ve never had whipped cottage cheese before, it’s a completely different situation than regular cottage cheese.

You only need a few simple ingredients and a high speed blender or food processor to transform plain cottage cheese into a delicious sweet treat.

Cottage cheese is unique and versatile because of its mild flavor, high protein content and its ability to be blended into a super creamy texture. There are so many delicious ways to use it.

It works well for both savory and sweet recipes, including this high protein chocolate mousse! It’s mild “cheesy” flavor gives this mousse an almost cheesecake-like flavor. Yum!

Let’s get into what you need to make it.

Ingredients

  1. Cottage cheese: Cottage cheese is of course our secret ingredient. You can use whatever you favorite cottage cheese is, I prefer Good Culture small curd full-fat cottage cheese (4%) for the best creamy texture. If you use fat free cottage cheese, the texture will be less creamy.
  2. Unsweetened cocoa powder: Cocoa powder is what makes the mousse chocolate-y. If you like a dark chocolate flavor, add more!
  3. Honey: You can use any liquid sweetener of choice that you enjoy. Maple syrup will also work, but the flavor and sweetness level will be different. If you want a sugar-free option, try a liquid sweetener like allulose.
  4. Vanilla extract: Just a small amount of vanilla extract adds more flavor to the mousse.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a food processor (this is my favorite) or high speed blender. You can also use an immersion blender in a tall cylinder container.

  1. Blend together on high until mouse is completely smooth. Note: If it looks grainy, keep blending!

  1. Top with whipped cream, fruit, or chocolate shavings!

Note: I find that it has a fluffier texture immediately after blending. If you want it to be more like a cottage cheese chocolate pudding, place in the refrigerator to firm up for about 20-30 minutes before serving.

Storage info: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Recipe FAQ

Is this a healthy dessert?

As a dietitian, I’m not anti-dessert (sometimes you need the real deal, and that’s okay!). But if you’re looking for a sweet treat that has a little more bang for its buck nutritionally, this is a great option with 15 g of protein per serving to keep you full and support any protein goals you have.

How do I get my cottage cheese smoother?

If you’re cottage cheese is grainy, try blending it for longer! I find that the extra minutes of blending really make a big difference in the smoothness of the mousse. If needed (some blenders/food processors may not be powerful enough), add a splash of milk or heavy cream to help it blend smoothly.

Variations

  • Sprinkle with chopped nuts or granola for crunch.
  • Top with fresh fruit like sliced strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries.
  • Layer with whipped cream and fresh fruit for a mousse parfait.
  • Add 1-2 tbsp of peanut butter for a chocolate peanut butter mousse. You can also use almond butter, cashew butter or sunflower seed butter.
  • Stir in mini chocolate chips for a chocolate chip mousse.
  • Stir in a crumbled Oreo or two for a high protein Oreo mousse!
  • Add a tiny bit of peppermint extract for a mint chocolate mousse!

Thanks for the recipe. I was a little skeptical at first being that it used cottage cheese but it actually works.
So here is a question for you. I had gastric bypass and I have type2 diabetes. So I’m looking for recipes that is high in protein, low carbs, low sodium (and I’m not into sugar substitutes) and taste good. To be honest I’m so not a veggie fan and it’s hard for me to digest meats like pork, chicken and red meats. Do you have any recipes that can cover most or all of these.

  2. Do you think it would work to sweeten with real maple syrup? I’m not a honey fan!

    1. I’ve made it both ways! It works but it’s just not as sweet so you may need to add a bit more maple syrup- you could also use some powdered sugar!

Oh my goodness this was amazing. I used Stevia instead of honey. It was smooth. Kind of had a bit if a bitter chocolate taste. Which I loved. I only added two tablespoons of cocoa powder. Sugar free cool whip was a perfect compliment. Thank you so very much for this perfect recipe. I soothed my chocolate craving without sugar or tons of calories. The best!!!!
