Best Oreo Balls Recipe

I love to make all types of truffle recipes. They are easy, decorative and perfect for any occasion. These are a family favorite, as well as sugar cookie truffles, chocolate chip cookie dough truffles and brownie truffles.

My kids love Oreo balls just as much as my cake pop recipe and ask me to make this easy dessert ever year for Christmas. Simple 3-ingredient Oreo balls recipe is the perfect no-bake treat for the holidays and will disappear off cookie trays!

Recipe Ingredients

Find the fullprintable recipewith specific measurements below.

  • Oreo cookies: I crush half Oreo cookies with the filling and half without the filling to give them just the right amount of sweetness in this quick dessert.
  • Cream cheese: A block of room temperature cream cheese gives Oreo balls a slight tang.
  • Chocolate: I use Ghirardelli chocolate melting wafers (white and milk chocolate) because they melt easily, but choose whatever chocolate you like best for a smooth finish.

Variations

Use different colored melting wafers or use a white chocolate base with sprinkles on top to match the holiday. Add the sprinkles right after dipping to ensure they stick.

To make Christmas Oreo balls I used white chocolate to dip and added red and green sprinkles with some holly berries. Add crushed candy canes to make peppermint Oreo balls. So fun and festive!

How to Make Oreo Balls

These Oreo truffle balls are easy to make and are a similar to a chocolate truffle but with an irresistible rich Oreo cream cheese filling.

  1. Crush Oreos. The best way to crush oreos is to place them in a blender or food processor. You can also place them in a zip top bag and smash with a rolling pin.
  2. Mix together the Oreo crumbs and cream cheese with a hand mixer. If it isn’t coming together, get your hands in there and mix it up.
  3. Scoop and freeze. Use a small cookie scoop to scoop out the dough. Then roll into a ball and place on the pan. Freeze for 10-15 minutes or until slightly firm.
  4. Dip in the melted chocolate using a fork, tap side of bowl to remove excess chocolate, place on lined baking sheet and decorate as desired.

Recipe FAQs

What type of Oreos are best to use for truffles?

There are so many varieties of Oreo cookies that can be used! I recommend using classic Oreo cookies, not double stuf Oreos. Double-stuffed will change the texture and be too wet and greasy.

Try other flavors like Golden Oreo dipped in white chocolate or Mint Oreo dipped in melted chocolate with crushed peppermint candies on top.

What is the best chocolate for dipping Oreo balls?

For a smooth finish when dipping candies, I always use Ghirardelli melting wafers. Wilton candy melts are another option when I need a certain color. Couverture chocolate or almond bark are two other options.

I only use chocolate chips when I am out of everything else as the finish is not as smooth, but you can add nuts or crushed Oreos to to top so it’s not as noticeable.

What is the best way to dip Oreo balls?

For a smooth finish on your Oreo cream cheese balls, make sure that your chocolate is melted and stirred until smooth. Also, have all ingredients ready to go so you can move quickly.

Place Oreo cookie ball on a fork and dip into chocolate. You could also use a spoon or skewer. Tap with a fork on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate and then use a toothpick to push the ball unto the parchment paper. Use the toothpick to draw a line around the edge to break off excess chocolate that pools. Apply decorations immediately.

How long will Oreo balls last?

That depends on how you store the cookie balls. They will keep at room temperature for a couple of days, but I do recommend keeping them in the fridge. They have less of a chance of melting.

Storing and Freezing

Store: Oreo truffle balls will last up to 1 week when stored in a covered container in the fridge. Place parchment paper between layers. When displaying on a dessert table, they can safely sit out at room temp for two hours.

Freeze: Oreo truffles can be kept frozen for up to 2 months. You can make them ahead, thaw in the refrigerator and bring them out whenever you need a truffle-like cookie sweet treat.

Ingredients

  • 36 OREO cookies (see notes)
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese , softened
  • 8 ounces white and/or milk baking chocolate (I prefer melting wafers)

Instructions

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a blender or food processor, pulse the Oreos (with filling) into fine crumbs. You can also place the Oreos in a zip-top bag and use a rolling pin to crush them.

  • In a large bowl, mix together the Oreo crumbs and cream cheese with an electric mixer. If it isn't coming together, get your hands in there and mix it up.

  • Using a small cookie scoop, portion the dough onto the baking sheet. Roll into a ball with your hands. Freeze 10 to 15 minutes, or until slightly firm. You don't want them too cold.

  • In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolatein the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in-between each, until smooth.

  • Use a fork to dip the Oreo balls into the chocolate. Tap on the edge of the bowl to get the smooth finish. Use a toothpick to help slide the ball back onto the baking sheet. Before the chocolate hardens, add sprinkles. Let harden completely.

  • Store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Notes

Oreos: You’ll need about 1 package of Oreos for this recipe. You don’t have to remove the filling, however I like to remove the filling from about 15 or so to make them less rich.

Variation: You can use different flavor of Oreos. The peppermint or golden Oreos also taste great. You can also use milk, dark, or white chocolate.

Storage:For best results, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 1 week or in the freezer up to 2 months.

I froze them for about 10 minutes before I rolled them and squished them into heart molds. I also used pink melting wafers and turned them into cake pops and told everyone they were balloons.

I’ve made these for years, my family loves them. Due to the expansion of flavors of Oreos I have been able to cater to my carrot cake and lemon lovers! Just substitute regular Oreos for your desired flavor, Yum! My favorite melting chocolates are wafers and almond bark. My next flavor to try are the coconut one.

I made these but did something a little different. After making them a few times I thought they were way too rich. So I took out most of the cookie icing, only left about 8 cookies with the icing in them. They were absolutely delicious. Not rich at all. Just the way I like them. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

What do you use the creme centers of the Oreo for?

    • Reply
      • I Heart Naptime

The cream centers get crushed with the Oreo’s to make the Oreo filling for the balls. It helps bind the cookie balls together and makes them extra delicious :)

could I not just put the Oreos and cream cheese in the food processor to combine them?

      • Reply
        • Jamielyn Nye

That should be fine! You just don’t want to over-mix them or they will be too soft to roll.
